How do you know if you actually like someone after a few dates?
A few dates in, the question often shifts from whether they like you to whether you actually like them, and that can be surprisingly hard to answer. Real interest tends to show up in small, steady ways: you are curious about them between dates, you feel more like yourself around them rather than less, and you look forward to seeing them rather than to being seen by them. Strong feelings are not required. Steady ones are a better sign.

Interest in them, or in being wanted
Being liked feels good, and it is easy to mistake that feeling for liking someone back. A useful test is to imagine they told you tomorrow that they were keen to keep seeing you. Is your first reaction warmth towards them, or relief that it went well?
Another is to notice what you think about between dates. Is it them, what they said and what they are doing, or is it how the date went and what they might think of you?
Sparks are not the only signal
Some connections start with intense chemistry. Others build slowly, and people who have been through difficult relationships sometimes find that calm feels unfamiliar at first, even boring. Calm is not the same as indifference.
If the time together is easy, you laugh, and you want to keep going, that may be worth more than a rush you are waiting for.
Notice how you are around them
Do you relax as the date goes on? Can you disagree with them without it feeling risky? Do you tell them true things about yourself? Feeling more like yourself around someone is one of the clearest signs a connection has something in it.
The opposite is also informative. If you find yourself editing everything you say, that is worth noticing, whether the cause is them or you.
Give it a fair test, then decide
It is reasonable to give a promising connection a few more dates before deciding, especially if the dates so far have been in noisy, rushed settings. Try something different: a walk, a meal where you can talk, time in daylight.
If after that the honest answer is still 'I'm not sure', that is an answer too. Not sure after five dates usually means not enough.
