What should you wear on a first date?
Wear something that suits the plan, the time of day and the weather, that is a little dressier than what you wear on an ordinary day, and that still looks like you. Comfort matters more than it seems to: clothes you will not keep adjusting and shoes you can walk in let you stop thinking about yourself and pay attention to the other person. Clean and well-fitting counts for more than new or expensive. And settling on the outfit the day before helps keep the last hour calm.

Start with the plan
Coffee on a Saturday afternoon, a walk on a busy trail, dinner somewhere with cloth napkins and drinks at a busy bar each call for something different. Think about whether you will be sitting, standing or walking, indoors or out, and how the temperature will change if the evening runs late: a patio that is pleasant at six can be cold by nine. On a trail, shoes with grip matter more than looking sharp.
If you do not know the plan, it is fine to ask. "Is this somewhere casual, or should I dress up a little?" is an ordinary question, and it saves you from guessing. If you chose the place, a small hint helps the other person too: "It's pretty relaxed," or "We'll be doing some walking."
A step up, and still you
A handy rule of thumb is to go one step dressier than you would on an ordinary day off. If your usual weekend is a hoodie and old sneakers, that might mean a clean sweater or a jacket you like and your better pair of shoes. If you are coming from work, what you wore all day may be fine, perhaps with a layer added or taken off. If you work in a uniform or come off a messy shift, a clean change of clothes in a bag solves it.
The aim is to look like yourself on a good day, not like someone else. An outfit that feels like a costume tends to make people stiff, and if things go well, the other person will meet your everyday self soon enough. Personality is welcome: a color you love, a favorite jacket, a piece of jewelry with a story behind it. Clothes tied to your faith or culture belong on a date as much as anywhere else.
Comfort you can forget about
The best date clothes are the ones you stop noticing after ten minutes. Skip anything you will keep tugging down, pulling up or checking in a window, and anything you can only sit in one way. Choose a waistband that still works after a meal and shoes you could walk in for an hour, because a coffee sometimes turns into a long walk.
If something is new, wear it around the house for an hour first: sit down in it, reach for things, walk around. Bring a layer for a chilly room, and somewhere to keep a charged phone, your keys and a way to pay, so you can get home on your own whenever you choose.
Clean and well-fitting beats new
You do not need to buy anything. Clothes that are clean, fit you well and have been ironed or steamed tend to look better than something new and expensive that does not quite sit right. Choose what fits your body as it is today. Then check the outfit in good light for stains, lint, pet hair, loose threads and scuffed shoes.
Grooming works the same way: your usual routine, done with a little more care. Hair done the way you like it, clean nails and fresh breath go a long way. Keep any scent light, so it is noticed only up close if at all, since some people find strong fragrance hard to sit next to.
Decide the day before
Choosing the night before can take a lot of the pressure out of it. Try the whole outfit on, check the forecast, iron what needs it and find both shoes. Keep a second option ready in case of rain or a spill, so the last hour can go to getting there calmly rather than to a scramble.
Once you are there, let it go. If you end up a little dressier or more casual than they are, that is common and easy to shrug off. What you wear says a little about you, but how you treat the person across the table says much more: whether you listen, how you speak to the server, whether your phone stays put away. Long after the evening, that is what tends to stay with someone.
