Am I ready to date again after a breakup?

There is no set amount of time you have to wait. Readiness has less to do with the calendar than with where your attention is: whether you are curious about meeting someone new for who they are, or mostly hoping they will fix how you feel about the last relationship. You can be ready three weeks after a breakup or not ready three years later.

Signs readiness is there

You can think about your last relationship without the conversation in your head turning into an argument. You have a reasonably clear idea of what went wrong, including your own part in it. Being single feels acceptable rather than unbearable, and dating feels like something you want rather than something you need.

None of these has to be perfect. Most people date again carrying some leftover feelings. The point is that the feelings are not steering.

Signs it might be worth waiting

Hoping a particular person will see you out with someone new. Comparing every match with your ex. Wanting to date mainly so evenings feel less empty. Swiping late at night mostly to feel wanted. These are ordinary reactions to loss, not failures, but they tend to make early dates harder on everyone involved.

If you notice them, it does not mean you cannot date. It may mean going more slowly, or being honest with yourself about what you are looking for right now.

Look at the pattern, not just the last breakup

Readiness is partly about this breakup and partly about what you bring to every relationship. If the same kind of relationship keeps ending the same kind of way, the most useful preparation may be understanding that pattern before repeating it.

That can be as simple as writing down how your last few relationships started and ended, and looking for what they have in common.

Start small

You do not have to decide in the abstract. A low-stakes first date, taken lightly, can tell you a lot about where you are. Afterwards, notice how you felt: interested, anxious, relieved it was over, or already thinking about someone else. That reaction is often better evidence than any amount of deliberating in advance.
