How do you know you're ready for a serious relationship?

Being ready for a serious relationship is less about age or how long you have been single and more about three things: having genuine room in your life for another person, knowing roughly what you want from a partnership rather than only what you do not want, and being able to be close to someone without losing track of yourself. You do not need all three perfectly in place. You need to be honest about which are there.

Is there room?

A serious relationship takes time, attention and flexibility. If your work, family obligations or a recent upheaval leave very little of those, a relationship will be competing for scraps, and the other person will feel it.

That is not a reason to rule it out. It is a reason to be clear with yourself, and with the people you date, about what you can offer right now.

Do you know what you want?

Many people can describe exactly what they do not want, usually based on the last relationship, and very little about what they do. A list of things to avoid is a start, but it does not help you recognise the right person when you meet them.

It is worth being able to say, in a sentence or two, what you want a relationship to add to your life, and what your few real non-negotiables are.

Can you be close and still yourself?

Some people keep partners at arm's length. Others disappear into a relationship and lose their friends, interests and opinions. Both patterns tend to show up early in a new relationship and grow from there.

Looking honestly at how your past relationships went on this front is one of the most useful things you can do before starting a new one.

Why you want it now

Wanting a serious relationship because you have met someone you would like to build one with is different from wanting one because friends are settling down or being alone has become uncomfortable. Both are human. Only one is really about the relationship.
